Being pregnant in the summer
This summer is just a little different from previous ones. You are carrying a little one, and this brings with it some different (and special) discomforts & needs!
We are sharing 10 tips to help you get through the summer comfortably during your pregnancy. Summer is just around the corner. Temperatures can sometimes rise significantly at your vacation destination, whether you are abroad or staying in the Netherlands. A pregnant body has to work a little harder to shed the heat of the summer sun. You will notice the consequences quickly if you sit in the sun: you may feel short of breath, flush easily, or sometimes feel nauseous. What can you do to minimize the discomfort from the heat?
1. Drink plenty of fluids
When you are pregnant, it is already important to drink more. When it is very hot outside, this is even more crucial. Try to avoid soft drinks and opt for water or tea instead. Also, don't wait until you feel thirsty, and don't drink your beverages too cold.
2. Don't eat too much salt
When you eat a lot of salt, your body retains more fluid. Therefore, choose hydrating foods rather than salty ones. Also, try to eat light meals; if necessary, eat more frequently to ensure you are getting the same nutritional intake.
3. Avoid the sun
Try to stay out of the sun between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM in any case. Furthermore, always wear protection if you do go out into the sun. Some women develop a "pregnancy mask" (melasma) during their pregnancy. For this reason, not only is sunscreen with a high SPF recommended, but a hat is as well.
4. Seek ways to cool down
When you go outside, try to sit in the shade or soak your feet in a foot bath to cool off. A wet cloth on your forehead or running your wrists under the tap is also an effective way to cool down.
It is even better if you can cool off in a swimming pool. Moreover, swimming is a great form of exercise while pregnant, as moving in the water is less taxing on your muscles. No pool nearby? You can also take a refreshing shower.
5. Take it easy
During pregnancy, your heart has to work a bit harder. When it is very hot, you have an increased risk of feeling dizzy or short of breath. So, put your friends and family to work and lean back on the couch yourself.
You sleep less at night than when you aren't pregnant, but when it's hot, this becomes even more difficult. Try to lie down or take a nap during the day.
6. Choose light colors
In the summer, light colors are most beneficial, even though gray and black are often popular with pregnant women. Try to avoid synthetic fabrics and go for materials like cotton.
7. Take care of your swollen legs/feet
Are you suffering from a lot of fluid retention in your legs at the end of the day? Due to gravity, all the fluid sinks to your ankles. Take care of your feet with a nice foot bath, perhaps with a magnesium solution in it!
8. Walk barefoot indoors/in the garden
Shed as much heat as possible through the ground. Animals don't lie flat on the cold floor for nothing. Heading out? Make sure you wear sturdy sandals and not "flimsy flip-flops" to help prevent pelvic pain.
9. Keep your bedroom cool
Keeping everything shut tight is the only solution. Keep the sun out so that it stays somewhat comfortable inside. Sleeping in a cool room ensures a good night's rest. Keeping the windows closed also keeps the mosquitoes out!
10. Above all, do as little as possible!
And let your partner and/or your children help you with this. Win-win.
